GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
First prize for the refurbishment of the existing German school in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to this and as part of the sustainable goal the use of natural daylight and natural ventilation was optimised which result in the overall product being used as a dynamic tool to educate pupils and promote broader environmental initiatives.
The design was based on minimal visual and physical impact on the environment with the building accompanying the different changes in level presented on the site, as well as allowing for visual connections to the unique backdrop provided by Table Mountain while enhancing the existing open space system.
The aim of the contest was to adopt a sustainable design philosophy and to demonstrate an appropriate response to the school’s unique location within the city bowl area.
